We did it.
(camera person laughing) - We did it.
(upbeat funky music) - Inspired by the film "Home Court", we asked sports leaders to tell us their stories while they put us through increasingly difficult challenges.
You started as a basketball player?
- I did.
- Growing up, playing basketball, playing D1 basketball.
And now we're here.
Just tell me about your journey with sports.
- Yeah, I started playing basketball at the age of four, in the Asian American leagues.
By the time I got to high school, I knew I wanted to play in college, but everyone said I was too short, I wasn't good enough, and I never played Division 1 College basketball, but luckily I didn't listen to them.
I had one offer to the University of Southern California.
Got a full ride there.
- Right on.
- Played four years, played overseas.
And then when I came back here, I just fell into CrossFit, and ended up competing, and opening up this gym, 12 years ago.
(upbeat funky music) - I would love to hear what led to you opening this gym.
- Yeah, so I tried out for the WNBA with the Los Angeles Sparks.
I ran an Asian American night for them, and one of the dads that brought his daughter to my clinic- great job- he had owned a CrossFit gym at the time, and said, "Hey, the way you move, the way you warm up, I think you'd really be good at CrossFit.
Come out and try this."
And then a year later we opened up this gym.
- That's awesome.
(Amy laughing) - Amy, I'm gonna say, I didn't hear a word you said.
I was too focused on.. - Hey, those were... - Were they?
- They were good.
They look good?
- Yeah, good job.
- God, I see how you were built for this.
(laughs) - Upbeat Music- - What sort of challenges did you have to face to become the leader and big business owner you are today?
- For collegiate basketball, I think my being Asian American was a huge challenge to get over because people didn't see Asian Americans as basketball players at the time.
And so the same thing kind of crossover to owning a gym, proving that my sister and I can run this business.
That's been a challenge we've overcome.
- Well then, all right, this challenge.
- Alright, we're doing five wall balls.
- Five wall balls.
- Squat to press.
You're gonna make sure you touch that black and blue line.
- All right, here we go.
- Heels down, drop down.
- Now hit it.
- Down low.
Yay.

- Upbeat Music- So we've heard a lot about your personal journey, but I would love to hear about the team who kind of helped you get to who you are today.
- Definitely.
Inspirations for me are my grandparents.
They were both sent off to internment camps and so for me there's such an inspiration to, to never complain, to just get the job done.
You can always work hard for what you want.
And so definitely my grandparents.
- Well I want to find that fighting spirit right now.
For this challenge, - We're gonna be doing some burpee pull-ups.
- All right.
So - We're gonna start under the bar.
We're gonna come all the way down to the ground in a full burpee with their chest and thighs on the ground.
You're gonna pop up, you're gonna jump up.
Okay.
Basketball and do a, alright, we got three of them all the way down.
Pop up.
Good.
Jump and pull up.
Yeah.
Perfect.
Down.
Pop your feet up.
Nice jump.
Yeah, that's it.
One more.
And all the way up.
Nice.
- Upbeat Music- - I wanna learn a little bit more about your background and kind of how that your identity as an Asian American woman has really shaped who you are as a leader.
- Definitely.
I think there are so many challenges that come with it.
There is a lot of an underdog kind of feeling.
And that's why I really related to Ashley in the film.
I love seeing her like fight and like proving like we have something to prove.
And so for me, that's always been my attitude.
Like, you don't think I can do it?
Like, watch me.
- It's challenge time.
- Challenge time.
What we do, we're gonna be doing some sled push Okay.
It'll be pretty easy.
- This is level one.
- Okay.
Level one.
Supposed to be easy.
We're gonna driving sand.
Let's go.
And we're gonna push Oh yeah.
- Easy.
It's easy.
Oh, easy.
So yeah.
Challenge number two.
I'm gonna stand on here.
You gotta push now.
- All Alright, here we go.
- Let's see if we can do this.
- Driving stands, let's go.
- Yeah.

Upbeat Music- - What from sports have you been able to take away to become the leader and mentor you are today?
- It truly has taught me every single lesson along the way from time management to being able to deal with people of all different personalities and, and really like, I lead with compassion and empathy and I, I truly believe sports and basketball and CrossFit has given me all these amazing opportunities and I'm so grateful - For, and you've taken these amazing opportunities and you've built something really special and it's been really fun to hang out with you.
- Our final challenge is going to be toes to rings.
Okay.
So you're going to jump up to the ring.
We'll be in a dead hang.
You can keep our feet together.
We're gonna get our toes.
Oh, all the way up.
Oh to the rings.
Exactly what it sounds like.
- Oh gosh.
- Yep.
- Alright.

- I don't even know if I've ever bent this way before.

I think you have a career in - Crossfit.
I think I, yeah.
I'm quitting the social media stuff.
