You know, I-I think it was the first time I ever experienced... I guess what they call "inspiration," because... I didn't know where those notes came from.
But it's a moment I'll never forget.
Like tonight.
(AUDIENCE CHEERS) Can you imagine that this is the last night of a thousand years?
(AUDIENCE CHEERS) Yeah, isn't that something?
We're here to see it.
And they say that you don't know where you're going until you know where you've been.
So perhaps at the dawn of a new century, it's an appropriate time for all of us to look back and reflect.

(SIGHS) Did you ever wonder what this night was like a thousand years ago in 999?
I mean, was there a Y1K problem?

I was there.

Happy New Year, honey.

Now look, Shirley, of course you were there.
Why didn't I think of that?
So, Shirl, were people worried about Y1K then?
You know, some were.
They were hoarding candles in case the sun went out.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) They believed that?
Yeah, some people were worried, like now.
Really?
So what, were most people poor then or... what?
Most were, but not everyone.
But there was this guy... Yeah.
...who melted sand into glass.
And then he put, uh, the glass in between two pieces of wood... Yeah.
...and he called his invention "Windows 1000."
(AUDIENCE LAUGHS) And, you know, next thing you know, everyone wants one.
Yeah.
I bet he made more money than the Pope.
Yeah, for a while.
And then the Pope came up with Stained Glass Windows 1000.
Stained Glass Windows?
Then... Well, the government got involved, and... Yeah, must have been a... Yeah, it was a big mess.
Yeah.
So, did the Y1K problem affect you, Shirley?
No.

I was touring Tibet back then.
Oh, were you doing a book tour?
No, I was doing a show.
Oh, really?
What show?
Uh, Cats.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Oh, my God, it has been playing forever.
(LAUGHTER CONTINUES) From what you said, it doesn't sound like Y1K was a huge problem, right?
You know, it really wasn't.
The men were a bit concerned.
You should talk to one of them.
Oh, like who?
Dick Clark.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHING) Dick Clark was there?
Yup.
The same Dick Clark?
Yeah.
And he looked great.
Same as he does now.
(LAUGHS) I don't know how he does it, but you look great too, Shirley.

I'm sure you've guessed by now, he's time with a capital T. Oh, no.
Some of you expected a guy, an old guy with a long gray beard.
No, he's young, even though he's been around forever.
So don't call him Father Time.
He prefers to be called Brother Time, and he's my friend.
And tonight, not only did I want time on my side, but by my side as we go back, first stop.

Do you remember where... where you were?
I had never been to a nightclub before I won a talent contest at a little place in the Village where I was making $50 a week and all the London broil I could eat.
And then I got a job at... around the corner it was, yeah, at the Bon Soir, at a bigger club, which I loved, except for the fact that they didn't serve food.
(AUDIENCE LAUGHS) My clothes came from thrift shops.
(WHISPERING) Thank you.
And I was very happy.
Of course, back then, I didn't have all these wonderful musicians.
I could only hear them in my head.
The Bon Soir just had a piano... (PIANO PLAYS) ...guitar, drums and a bass.
(DRUM ROLLS, PIANO CONTINUES PLAYING) MAN: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to New York City's Bon Soir.

This chair and I kind of started together.
The first time I sat in it was when I was 18 years old.

On stage at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway.

What I loved about the theater was being able to, um, create a character, and for a couple of hours a night, live in her world.

I... Yeah, I wanted to know who the girl was, and they said it was me.

I even think they said my name right.
Um... I... I couldn't believe it, you know, because I thought, I guess I had made... I don't know how many albums by then, 45 or something, and so many songs.
I actually forgot that I recorded that one.

Growing up, I always wanted to write music.
Maybe a symphony, maybe something for a movie, you know?
And when I was 14, I remember... standing in front of the mirror with a hairbrush, conducting Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, crying.
I also wanted to play the part, by the way.
It was my first dream hyphenate, conductor-actress.
Anyway, as time went by, I did write the music for several songs, most of which I'm sure you've never heard.
But... you have.
(CHUCKLES) And with songwriting not being my day job, you can imagine what a thrill it was to... to have the opportunity to write a song, to actually write a song for a movie.
This was thrilling.

One night, um... a few years ago, I was sitting around at home with two of my girlfriends and they were talking about... their fathers.
And since my own father died when I was 15 months old, I really couldn't relate.
And at the end of the evening, I went up to my office to... It's just tea, you know.

And when I opened it, I couldn't believe what I saw.

The playback system decides to go out.
My stand-in had to hold a boombox underneath the camera so I could have something to sing to.
We're at the end of the day, I've got to get the shot.
We're losing the light and there's nothing without the light.
So I just closed my eyes and I prayed to God and my father... to let the setting sun be enough light to illuminate this next song.

"And, my patient listener, did you get the lesson I told?"
And these words really did help change my priorities.
My father was telling me something that I needed to hear, that there's nothing more important in life than love.
And though I received his message more than 60 years after he wrote it, it was timeless.
And what followed were some remarkable changes.

And to me, it's a song about remembering people who've meant something to you in your life.
