Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipAPPRAISER: Tell me about this toy.
When did you get it?
GUEST: It was given to me in 1945 for Christmas by my mother.
APPRAISER: It was one of my favorite toys as a kid.
And as a uh dealer and collector, it was probably the first toy I ever bought as a collector.
And it started a collection which started my career.
This is, as you know, it's a comic character toy.
It's based on the comic strip character Little Abner.
And this was one of the first post-war toys.
Was very, very popular.
Is fairly easy to find today, but seldom in such fine condition with all the component figures with the original decorated box.
Box of a toy of this period adds a lot of value to it.
And what did they sell them for then?
Here you have an original price tag of $2.59 from FW Woolworth.
Well, you were a good little boy.
You kept this toy in very good condition.
I wish you'd kept the box a little bit nicer.
GUEST: Well, but we Hard to do.
APPRAISER: This toy in today's market at auction would bring a lot more than $2.59.
Do you have any idea?
GUEST: No idea at all.
No idea.
APPRAISER: Well, this toy would probably sell at auction for between $450 to $600, depending on the auction, depending on the day, and the luck of the sale.
GUEST: That's quite a increase in value.
APPRAISER: Yes.
