Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: My mother was an antique hound, and she bought it at a small antique dealer that she was friends with.
She told us it was old.
APPRAISER: One of the things that caught my attention was the dragon... GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: ...which most people associate instantly with Chinese or Japanese art.
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: Often you hear the mythology about a five claw dragon denotes that the object was made for imperial use, for the imperial household.
GUEST: Ooh, interesting.
APPRAISER: And if you had four claws, that means it wasn't.
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: But this happens to have five claws.
GUEST: Oh, this is getting interesting.
APPRAISER: As one looks at it more and more, you start to look up here at the top.
And as ivory, ivory always has sort of a grain to it.
GUEST: Okay.
APPRAISER: It's like a tree ring.
If you look on this, you notice that there isn't any tree rings.
And in fact, what we've got is a piece of plastic.
GUEST: Is it really?
(laughs) APPRAISER: It's plastic.
GUEST: That's funny.
APPRAISER: And it has, it has a value of probably not more than about $5 or $10.
GUEST: (sucks teeth) Interesting-- well, I guess APPRAISER: Which is a great shame.
GUEST: that antique dealer didn't pa-pass on such a great find, did she?
(laughs) Well, adds to the story, so that's good.
