And then, when I graduated from medical school, he gave it to me as a gift.
He says, "Now you're ready to have something worthwhile."
APPRAISER: Mm-hmm.
GUEST 2: My husband always admired it£ APPRAISER: Uh-huh GUEST 2: £as a youngster and his mother would not-- wouldn't let him look at it, because it was a nude.
APPRAISER: Uh-huh.
GUEST 2: (laughing): So when he graduated from school... APPRAISER: Uh-huh.
GUEST 2: ...he said, uh, "Oh, you're ready to have it now, you've had anatomy."
(laughs) APPRAISER: Oh.
Well, this is really a wonderful present.
This is by an American sculptor named Harriet Frishmuth.
It's one of her most, most famous models.
This is called "Crest of the Wave."
And many of her sculptures were of, uh, nudes, and especially dancers.
This piece is very clearly signed with her name, Harriet Frishmuth.
And it's dated here, 1925.
And just below it is the foundry mark, the Gorham Company Founders same company that made silver, and for many years they had a bronze foundry.
It has its original patina on it, which is this wonderful greenish, uh, brown color.
This is a very popular model, and they actually made a version of it that was 65 inches high as a, uh, garden sculpture and fountain.
GUEST 1: Hm.
APRRAISER: Did you have some idea of the value of this?
GUEST 1: Not exactly, although I had a friend of mine in New York who said that he read an article in the Times where a similar statue was sold at Christie's for about $13,000.
APPRAISER: Uh-huh.
Well, actually, the last one that sold in New York brought $16,000.
GUEST 2: Oh, wow.
GUEST 1: My goodness.
APPRAISER: So, actually, uh, you got a very, very nice graduation present.
GUEST 1: Well, thank you very much.
GUEST 2: (laughing) I'll say.
APPRAISER: You're welcome.
GUEST 2: Gorgeous statue.
APPRAISER: Mm-hmm.
GUEST 2: Love it.
